Internal Politics
Work becomes a whole lot less fun when it feels more like a battle for credit than actually getting things done.
I think that the "work" part of work is often easy.
It's the people part where things get difficult.
At some point, in every company, internal politics start to creep in.
- Someone doesn't feel seen
- The sales leader is battling with the marketing leader over inbound vs. outbound
- A younger employee who did all the work is frustrated that the VP they think is kind of a tool is now presenting the team's "wins" and passing them off as his own, without giving credit to the crew that actually did the work
But it doesn't have to be like this. Healthy teams worry about winning together, not who gets the credit. A good boss / manager / CEO is able to see through the BS and know who did the work - and most importantly, good work is REWARDED. Sometimes it's a "nice job" message that goes a long way, a shoutout in front of the whole company, or sometimes it's an unexpected raise or promotion.
Internal politics and the constant scramble for acknowledgment and "credit" can suck the joy out of your job. Don't let that creep into your company.
Be direct with people. Call out the BS when you see it. Find ways to cut this before it spreads. Build a culture that gives credit where it's due. A team that lifts each other up. One that wants to win together - because that's when everyone wins - vs. battling over credit.
