7 Tips For Creating an Engaging Presentation
A former colleague of mine texted me yesterday.
She was a product manager when I was at Drift, and I while I was there I gave a training on how to become a better public speaker and create an engaging presentation - inside or outside of the company.
7 years later she is still using the notes she took during that session to write presentations at her new company, and it reminded me I should share some of those tips with you.
Here are the rough notes:
- Start with a Story that brings you to the Hook (use a story to be relatable and bring in the audience; the other day, I tried to buy something at the store, and this thing happened… tie it back to your core problem; this builds trust and earns attention right away).
- Problem - Solution - Examples/Proof - Call to Action is a simple framework to follow for a presentation.
- Keep your slides simple; people will either listen to what you’re saying or watch what’s on the slide, rarely they can both.
- Use images or 1-2 words on a slide to help your transition or cue you “but here’s the problem” and “so here’s what we’re going to do”
- Spend most of your time on the meat - the specifics, the examples. I see many presentations that ramble on forever without getting into the MEAT. Don’t let this be you; less intro, less setup, more specifics please.
- Use the pre-frame: pre-frame the room so your audience knows what to expect; “I am so excited to share this big update with you today because ___” aka set expectations for what you’re going to share vs. making them wait 40 minutes for the punch line. Also: this is why I never tell people “i’m so nervous” on stage; it pre-frames the room to think I’m nervous and won’t do a good job
- Get QUICK WINS when you’re speaking — it’s so important that you get off to a good start; tell a relatable story, get a good laugh in, share a good example …. quick wins help you relax and build momentum + get the audience engaged

- What soft and hard skills led you to where you are today?
- What role has your brand on LinkedIn played in your career growth?
- What are the top things you’ve learned as a CMO?
